01 - Sketch
01 - First, the image was sketched onto the largest canvas I'd painted to that point at 48" x 60". The sketch was done from a photo of the major components I lit and shot. |

02 - Candles
I decided to start with the candles, and used several layers of translucent yellow and orange to create a glowing effect. I was excited at how much they popped off the canvas. Two of my reference photos are seen at the bottom. |

03 - Background Underpaint
I laid down the first layer of a near black underpaint to the background and based in the column. I also sketched in the dark areas on the armor and helmet, and began shaping up the candlesticks. |

04 - Collumn & Background
I brought out the shape of the collumn, letting the light fall off above and to the side. I also blended the background into a dark brown that falls off to black to the outside. More detailing on the candlesticks, and the bench. |

05 - Helmet
After roughing in the gradation of the floor, I did the drapery at the top and then began on the Corinthian style helmet. First the blonde mane, then the reflections, including shaping out the letter-blocks. |

06 - Back Armor
Upon completion of the helmet, I finished up the drapery hanging out of the breast armor and then started on the back armor and reflections. |

07 - Breast Armor
I finished off the reflections on the back armor and then proceeded with the breast armor, including leather straps and brass buttons. Then I added just a few more reflecting items. |

08 - Finished!
I finished up various details all over, and then focused on the shiny stone floor. There was a mosaic pattern in the original photo, but I felt the detail detracted from the piece, so I kept it clean, and accentuated the highlight streaks and harsh shadows on the sides. After an overall glossy varnish, I added several extra layers of gel-varnish to the armor and helmet specifically. |
